Fellowship Cup: Boss Fight

After the pressure of the tournament is over, it's time for one more fight, just for fun. (Well, the whole thing is just for fun, but we all know what I mean. The three winners, Silver Surfer, Batman, and Spawn returned to the depths of Moria to face the fearsome Balrog. The three fighters were somewhat relieved to be able to work together for a change, but that relief was overshadowed by the awesome size of their new foe.

Fortunately, their fears were ungrounded. The ancient demon never was able to land a hit. When the fight began, he hadn't even made it to the narrow bridge yet, when Silver Surfer flew into action. While making quick laps around the slow giant, he flashed off rapid blue flares from his hands that exploded into the monster's hide. While he continued the aggressive spiraling, Batman and Spawn began to run at the Balrog across the bridge, preparing their gear. Spawn stopped once within range and began laying down heavy suppressive fire at critical points in the natural armor of the target. Utilizing the dual cover, Batman ran in fast while crouching and planted explosives on the beast's legs and feet. He then leapt clear of the imminent explosion and prepared whatever tools he would need in the next few seconds. His caution was unneccessary, since the following precussions knocked the creature into the chasm as it roared mightily. As the two non-flying characters watched, the Surfer flew down into the pit after the falling beast, continuously shooting heavy beams at it as it fell. Minutes later, he appeared hovering out of the chasm with his arms folded. Any other teammates would have sighed in relief or given out handshakes and hugs. But all present kept grim faces and shared a silent salute to each other. Then each departed, to return to his own world and continue his duty, whatever it may be. The threat was gone, for now.

Fellowship Cup: Final Match

This is it! The final test to determine the very best of all of our excellent fighters. The final match between Batman and Silver Surfer took place among the ruins of Amon Hen.
Moments before the fight, the afternoon was pleasant and silent, save for the combatants' gentle tread on the leaves. The air smelled clean and tasted fresh, and everything was warmed by the sun. It was the late afternoon, and the sun was just beginning to cast long shadows of the trees and the great stone structures on the ground. Both fighters had come far, and both fully knew the intensity that was to come.

The Dark Knight hadn't slept the night before, but stayed up exercising and studying his foe. While the Surfer was from a different universe and had no history with his, Batman lost no time in studying previous fights and the tactics his opponent used. Although he had the advantage of raw power, Batman knew that his technique was simplistic and unvarying. If he wanted to have any success, he knew he would have to exploit that.

The Silver Surfer spent the night in space. While his life consisted of space travel and the new planets he visited amazed him, Norrin Radd never found space any less beautiful. Out here, at least for a little while, he couldn't hear people's screams or gunshots, and no flawed humans ruined the beauty of nature. No one else could see what he saw then. A nebula, vast and colorful, far surpassing an earth sunset. Shooting stars, novas, great planets, all these things were vivid, alive, and uncorrupted. Then the Surfer turned towards earth, and looked down on the oceans and the clouds. He sat on his silver board, gazing, until the sun came around the planet the next morning. It filled his vision. He smiled, and began his descent towards earth.

The fight began at the great stone structure on top of the hill. Silver Surfer was hovering in the air over it, when he saw Batman standing on the corner of the stone, silently staring at him. The Surfer had the speed advantage, and extended one hand towards Batman, releasing an energy bolt. Batman didn't flinch, staring down the floating silver man until the last second, when he rolled to the side along the edge of the ruins. The blast broke off the corner where he'd been standing, reducing it to rubble. From a crouch shrouded by his cape, Batman threw several batarangs back-handedly, one of which hit the Surfer in the chest mid-flight, exploding on contact. The target was surprised and slightly damaged, but he swerved around, halting his flight and blasting more energy from his hands. Batman dodged again this time, and quickly flung a small attachable bomb, which the Surfer was not watching. The bomb, like the batarangs, attached to his chest, and just as he looked down, it exploded in his face, stunning him and knocking him off his board. As he lay for a minute on the grass, Batman stood on the ancient stone throne and assessed the situation. For as long as he could afford it, Batman stood on the throne.

Surfer was learning fast, though, and called his board to himself from the spot where it lay on the ground. The board scooped him up, and he rolled to his feet while still in motion. While flying incredibly fast and with both hands extended, he poured intense energy through his fingertips. The ancient stone throne exploded with blue energy, sending chunks of rock everywhere, and throwing Batman onto his back on the ground. While he lay stunned and smoking, Silver Surfer dismounted, ran towards him, and punched him hard. The force of the punch was immense, and Batman was knocked through the air and far down the hill. Without taking time to watch him fall, Surfer jumped on his board again and soared after him.

Batman landed next to a large stone head statue that was cracked and partially buried. Fighting not to allow himself the precious seconds his body demanded after a heavy fall, Batman very slowly struggled to his hands and knees. At that moment, a shining silver outline appeared in a space in the trees, staring down the small slope at the crushed body trembling there. Batman looked up at the man, undamaged to all appearances, and ready to use all his energy to blast him into the sky again. Batman thought about all he'd fought for so far, and about his duty to the people of Gotham. And then he collapsed.

After the Surfer saw his honorable foe fall, he lifted his body on to his board, and lifted into the air, away from the rubble and the scars in the earth. After getting Batman to safety, Norrin Radd longed to escape the fighting on earth, just for a little while. So he accelerated higher and higher, ascending through the atmospheric layers, until he broke free of gravity and of the sky. Now, for just a little time, there was nothing else. Space was so beautiful...

Congrats to Joel Fevig as the Silver Surfer for first place in our first ever tournament. Carl Henderson as Batman placed second and Elison Cepeda as Spawn placed third. Incidentally, these three characters will be teaming up for the boss fight against the Balrog.

Again, congrats to all of you, however you did, and let's hope for the best with the continuation of this game. Long live chaos and order!

-Malcolm

Fellowship Cup: Semifinals

Ok, we're down to the last two fights before the championship match. These two were pretty interesting fights, and both took place in Lothlorien Woods.
The first was between two dark and mysterious warriors, Batman and Spawn. The fight was hard to track for those watching, since both veteran fighters used their excellent stealth skills and the cover of all the trees to avoid detection the entire time. Batman had a slight speed advantage, and he sprang into action, relying on his keen intellect to formulate a plan as he worked. He quickly adapted and learned to use the trees like the towering buildings of Gotham, and was able to swing and grapple off of trees quickly and nearly silently. His first attack came when he threw several batarangs from a tree limb behind Spawn, but Spawn had been tracking Batman's trajectory, and he was able to easily shoulder-roll forward to avoid the shots. He then pulled out an assault rifle and raked the trees with a barrage of hot lead. Batman reflexively leapt towards another tree and shot his grapple gun at it, but a few of the bullets hit him in non-critical places, slowing him a bit. Batman landed a little shakily on another branch, but soon steadied himself enough to swing down at Spawn. The kick struck Spawn in the back, knocking him forward. Spawn sprang up from the golden leaves on the forest floor, however, and hit Batman in the face with a heavy punch. The fight went on for a long time, with Spawn clearly having a strength advantage over Batman. Batman was getting progressively weaker, but was still conscious enough to steadily dodge most of the attacks. After too much of the fight, Sudden Death was declared, in which the next hit landed declares the winner. Both combatants threw themselves at each other, but Batman thought fast and landed a quick punch to the ribs. This one was over.

Batman vs. Spawn= Batman

The second of the fights was not nearly as evenly matched, featuring the cosmically powered Silver Surfer against Batman's protege Nightwing. Batman had trained his pupil well, and Nightwing was able to use a similar technique and rely on the trees for cover and stealth, but the Surfer was able to easily dart around the forest on his board and shoot energy blasts in Nightwing's wake. The young man was fairly able to keep his head under pressure, but he was clearly outmatched. He kept moving and dodging while trying to think, but the Surfer landed just too many blasts that knocked the man senseless. The intergalactic guardian was not a cold conqueror, however, and saw to his opponent's wounds before returning to the cold void of space to await his master's summons.

Silver Surfer vs. Nightwing= Silver Surfer

Ok, only one more! It looks light Batman will have to use all his wits in the upcoming battle with the Silver Surfer. Also, Spawn has been awarded third place in the tournament for landing the most damage on his opponent before falling. Congratulations.
